Liam Neeson is an actor’s actor - he seems capable of playing any role and does so convincingly. Mr. Neeson can currently be seen as the leader of the A-Team… the role made famous on the small screen by George Peppard.
From Stars Wars episode 1, Batman, and to his acting tour de force in Schindler’s List, we have come to respect and enjoy Mr. Neeson’s work - Maybe it’s that distinct voice (Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia) and accent or bringing that intangible to the roles he plays (See Dark-Man, my personal favorite).
In his current role as the A-Team leader, Mr. Neeson had to emulate the George Peppard character (Hannibal Smith) penchant for Cuban cigars… and as a consequence, during the filming… he was given cigars to smoke. This smoking caused Mr. Neeson to be hooked again on smoking… a habit he had given up for some sixteen years. This is what they must mean when they say someone is suffering for his or her art; at least, that is my take on the situation.
The truth be told, Mr. Neeson, not one to discus personal reasons, may have a clinical excuse for resorting to the bad habit of smoking because of his recent lost. We all are privy to the accidental death of Natasha Richardson, Mr. Neeson’s beloved wife; and recently, the passing of the actress Lynn Redgrave, Natasha’s aunt, from cancer.
So, if Mr. Neeson is engaging in smoking to relieve stress or whatever, it is understandable. Whatever the reasons for Mr. Neeson’s smoking, we admire his resolve and fortitude in what must been a difficult time with his recent loses, but we look forward to seeing him in many roles to come… the distinct chameleon that he is, yet readily recognizable because of the uniqueness Mr. Neeson brings to his craft.
