Joining the ranks of timeless artists such as Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, and James Brown, Prince received the Lifetime Achievement Award during last night’s BET Awards Show for 2010. Prince, now 52 years old, has been making music, and a considerable name for himself, for more than three decades. Some of his classic hits include my personal favorite Prince song, “Raspberry Beret”, and other amazing songs such as “Kiss”, “When Doves Cry”, and “Little Red Corvette.”

Prince was born Prince Rogers Nelson and has been known by various names throughout his career. Some readers will remember the time from 1993 to 2000 that he was known in his professional career by an unpronounceable symbol causing the media and fans to dub him “The Artist Formerly Known as Prince.”  While his singing career made him famous and is what he is most well known for today, he also dabbled in songwriting and acting. Some of his accomplishments include being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well as winning 7 Grammys, 1 Golden Globe, and 1 Academy Award.

Prince was in attendance last night as BET decided to give further recognition to Prince’s career and impact in the entertainment industry. The artist took to the stage to receive the award after several singers performed a tribute in his honor. Alicia Keys sang “Adore” while Pattie Labelle chose to perform “Purple Rain;” Janelle Monae and Esparanza Spaulding also performed numbers during the Prince tribute. While accepting his award, Prince gave recognition to his fellow artists and remarked on the current state of the music industry by saying “I do believe the future is in good hands.” Prince looked visibly touched as he emotionally accepted the award he was honored with.
