The Windows Live Messenger app for the iPod touch and iPhone gets off to a great start by being absolutely free! No longer will regular Windows Live Mail users, especially those new to apple’s portable touchscreen devices, have to put up with apple’s pre-installed ‘mail’ app which has no Windows Live support.
From the initial start-up the app is gorgeous to look at – bright, fluid visuals are faithful to Windows Live’s well known and recognised look and there is no jerky movement when scrolling through conversations or emails, everything runs very smoothly.
Once you have input your mail details into the app, they are saved – you do not have to re-enter them every time you wish to check your email or go on Messenger, which is a plus. There are four main ‘tabs’ on the app; social, friends, chats and photos.
The social section is the equivalent of Facebook’s ‘live feed’, where all of your friend’s status updates and photos etc. appear for you to view. This section is also where you can open your email account to view your inbox and write and send new messages. You can search for individual messages and delete any if you wish.
The friends section lists all of your contacts, showing who is online and offline and offers a search bar to quickly find who you’re looking for. You can also create categories to place your contacts in, for example family members. The whole interface is clean and crisp, making it easy to see what’s going on.
By tapping on a contact you wish to have a conversation with, the app flicks to the third section – chats. All of your current conversations are located here, and you can easily switch between them at the tap of a button. The conversation interface itself is very well implemented, with speech bubbles popping up when you or your contact says something, a dedicated smiley section and a photo sharing section to boot. It even plays the classic MSN jingle when you receive a message, which is incredibly useful if you are constantly switching between conversations. One fantastic feature is that even if you minimize the app, as long as you remain connected to the internet your conversations will stay open and the jingle will play when you receive a message. By turning your device on its side you can rotate the app to increase the size of the keyboard and make typing a breeze.
The final section is photos. In this section you can view any photos you have uploaded to your Windows Live blog, or you can upload them straight from your device and sort them into albums.
Overall, the Windows Live Messenger app is absolutely fantastic and perfectly implemented. Finally the wait is over for an official, working Windows Live Messenger app and whether your main focus is checking your email on the go or chatting to your friends online whenever you like, this is definitely the app for you.
