Apple has suspended the pre-order function for the new iPhone 4. The reason? Too many people have pre-ordered. They don't have the supply to meet the demand. On Tuesday alone, Apple took more than 600,000 pre-orders for it's new iPhone 4.
This is an outstanding number. It is over 10 times higher than last year's iPhone 3GS pre-orders. The AT&T website even suffered system malfunctions due to the deluge of visitors to the company's website. Tuesday was AT&T's busiest online sales day in its history with over 13 million visits to the company's website on that day. That is an extraordinary high amount of visitors.
Apple apologizes to the customers who had problems with the system and also to those who turned away or abandoned the process in frustration.
Apple stopped allowing people to pre-order the iPhone 4 so they could first fulfill the orders that had already come in. When they have done this and the iPhone 4 is back in stock, they will be accepting orders again.
AT&T's website basically crashed due to the huge amount of traffic and orders so they are probably working on getting it fixed. They declined requests to comment on the issue.
The demand for the iPhone 4 is unprecedented.
"[The number of pre-orders] was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions," Apple said in a prepared statement. "Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock."
This demand means that some of the customers who ordered their iPhones on Tuesday won't receive them on June 24, the first day they become available in stores.
The iPhone 4 will, no doubt, out-sell the iPad. I'm sure of this because 600,000 pre-orders in one day is pretty good. I mean, have you ever seen anything like this before?
So, if you are waiting to pre-order your iPhone 4, I don't know what to tell you, you're just going to have to sit tight until they become available again.
