Bloomsday is a celebration of the novel Ulysses by the Irish writer James Joyce. The novel describes the happenings on June 16 in Dublin, Ireland, experienced by Leopold Bloom, the main character of said novel. The book is considered to be one of the greatest novels ever written. It describes the adventures of Leopold Bloom and Stephen Dedalus.

Here some quotes from Ulysses (from novelguide.com):
"I hate that in women no wonder they treat us they way they do we are a dreadful lot of bitches I suppose its all the troubles we have makes us so snappy". (p. 927 - Chapter Three Episode Eighteen 'Penelope')

These are Molly's tangled, contradictory yet understandable views of the relations between men and women.

"Yes" (p. 933 - Chapter Three Episode Eighteen 'Penelope')

Famously the last word of Ulysses, as Molly first agreed to Bloom's desire.

There are many quotes that are falsely attributed to Ulysses, like for example "leggings are not pants ", which is a quote from Insider Beauty: Secrets of the Fit & Fabulous By Diane Irons and not from Ulysses.

In Dublin, this day traditionally involves all kinds of activities, as for example Ulysses readings and dramatisations of the novel, bar-hopping and general fun and amusement. There is a James Joyce Centre in North Great George's Street, which hosts many of these activities. Fans dress up in costumes related to the time of the beginning of the 20th century and march through the streets retracing Bloom's route from the book.

Bloomsday 2010 is not only celebrated in Dublin, but all around the world today. Fans of James Joyce's famous novel "Ulysses" congregate to honor this day. 16 June 1904 was the date of Joyce's first outing with his wife-to-be, Nora Barnacle, when they walked to the Dublin urban village of Ringsend.

Almost every larger city has some kind of Bloomsday celebration. Warsaw, the Polish capital for example has joined in the worldwide tribute to Irish novelist James Joyce. Another example is New York. Culturemob.com gives a taste of this:
Bloomsday In New York City offers a plethora of activities, from Bloomsday on Staten Island to a celebration at the American Irish Historical Society to Radio Bloomsday (on WBAI) to The Bloomsday Collection, a fashion show and "Bloomsday on Broadway".

If your teachers have  not read Ulysses yet or if you want to refres your memory, you can read up on it on Google books: Ulysses on Google Books.
