“Shutter Island,” the Martin Scorsese thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio that grossed nearly $300 million worldwide, was released on DVD and Blu-Ray on June 8.

In an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Dennis Lehane, DiCaprio plays a US Marshall investigating the disappearance of a patient who has gone missing at a remote hospital for the criminally insane.

The DVD and Blu-Ray versions offer sharp picture quality and sound, but little in the way of extras. In fact, the standard DVD version offers no bonus features whatsoever (unless you count subtitles as something special). The Blu-Ray version has a couple of featurettes which total less than 40 minutes combined. One, “Behind the Shutters” is a making-of documentary that includes spoilers, so don’t watch it until after you’ve watched the movie. The other, “In the Lighthouse,” focuses on how psychiatric approaches have changed over time, from lobotomies to more humane and care-based methods.

More notable is what’s missing: No audio commentaries with Scorsese or DiCaprio. No deleted scenes. Nothing too immersive, even on Blu-Ray. If you’re interested in this release, you basically get the movie and nothing else. This seems like one of those releases designed to capture the first wave of movie-watchers, with a “special edition” waiting in the wings at some point. But for now, the latest Scorcese movie is finally on DVD and Blue-Ray. It’s just kind of lonely on the disc.
