I had become accustomed to heaven… seeing Jeff Gordon, whose car is the 24, on a regularly basis celebrating in victory lane, but now I am “jonesing”… wondering when I am gong to see the 24 car on a regular basis in victory lane again? It is not that we are not doing well points wise, but we are accustomed to win races and we haven’t done so in a long time – at least for Jeff Gordon. They aren’t distractions as far we know for Mr. Gordon… so the lack of victory must be that there is parity in NASCAR. With cars owned by Joe Gibbs, Tony Stewart, and other skilled drivers hungry for victories, the Hendrick team now has formidable competitors.

According to the race car pundits, Jeff Gordon still has the driving skills, but the 24 crew has made rookie mistakes in several races. Personally, I will defer to the pundits, but the races I have seen showed a 24 car not being able to match many of its competitors. In addition, there seems to be animus between Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon because the former during earlier races in the season, seemed to deliberately causing mischief for Gordon’s 24 car. The irony is not only that Johnson is part of the Hendrick team with Gordon, but also the car that Johnson drives, the 48,  and wins a lot in… is partially owned by Gordon.

Even at Pocono, the 24 wrecked in the final lap, but it was not a factor to win before the mishap. The 24 is losing on tracks that were conducive in the past to Gordon’s forte; these are tracks where Gordon has had success multiple times. The 24 car has come oh so close to celebrate in victory lane, but for over a year now… no cigars. Jeff Gordon’s lack of winning is a reminder how successful he has been… so much so that his current top ten finishes are considered to be failures for the 24 car.
