iPhone 4 Grabs Headlines - Google's Android Sells Better
If anything Apple is happening, the media is all over it. That is especially true for the smartphone market. Google’s Android OS was probably not touted as much, but sold like hotcakes.
It's David against Goliath actually. In this case Apple is the David: The iPhone, while representing one operating system, is only one model, or if you count all iPhone variations, it's just a small handful.
Google's Android fight with many weapons: Almost everyday there are new phones coming out that feature the Android operating system.
Here is a graphic that show the findings of Nielsen. Among US buyers of smartphones within the last 6 months, 27% chose a phone with the Android Operating System. While 33% selected Apple, the Apple number is declining markedly, while the Android number is rising steadily.
Nielsen states it on their blog, titled "Android Soars, but iPhone Still Most Desired as Smartphones Grab 25% of U.S. Mobile Market":
"Android’s rise is even more noticeable among new smartphone subscribers in the last six months where Android has nosed past Apple’s iOS in the last quarter to grab a 27% share of those recent smartphone subscribers."
If the trend continues, it might be that 40% to 50% of all smartphones will be using the Google Android System by the end of this year.
So, it looks like the question Is The Droid X Phone A Worthy Competitor For Apple’s iPhone? can be answered with a yes, or at least the market has answered that the Android platform is smarted than an island-solution. Even federal court has ruled that it is completely alright to break out of confinements in regards to operating systems, by making jailbreaking legal (This is the document that states how jailbreaking is legal in the U.S. Recommendation of the Register of Copyrights June 11, 2010)
