The worst floods and monsoon rains in Pakistan left about 3 million people homeless. Each and every bridge on the Indus River got partially or completely damaged by the floods, let alone small houses made of mud or bricks in the villages. The only few buildings left in flood-affected areas are completely occupied. Four or five families have to share one room to get shelter from still heavily pouring monsoon rains. This is undoubtedly one of the biggest natural disasters in recent times, surpassing the number of people affected in Haiti or Tsunami mishaps. According to The World Food Program, about 50 of the country’s 135 districts got affected by floods, which also destroyed 39 major health facilities in Pakistan.
The US government is doing as much as it takes to help out its biggest ally in the South Asian region. The government also urged people of the U.S. to contribute to its flood relief efforts by making small donations through text messages. According to the Washingtonscene The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton herself demonstrated how to donate through texting by sending the word SWAT to 50555 and replying “yes” to the confirmatory message. This text will help you make a $5 or $10 donation to the U.N. High Commission, which is doing its best to help flood victims. Clinton urged her nation to show generosity, which they have always shown to the people facing crisis.
“I just texted a contribution myself, because we know from our own experience, particularly in Haiti, small donations can add up to make a big difference,” said Clinton after texting. “Americans have always shown great generosity to people facing crises worldwide. So I urge Americans to join this effort and send some much needed help to the people of Pakistan.” The donated money will be used to provide tents, clothing, food, basic health care, clean drinking water and medicines to people affected by the destructive flooding in the Swat Valley, she said.
If you want to help the flood victims survive you can also contribute any amount you like by texting. It hardly takes a few seconds and small effort to donate $5 by texting, but your small donation means a world to the people facing the biggest crisis in recent history of the world. Your small donation can save a life.
