When the first iPhone came out, it was possible to just go to a website and jailbreak it. The website that did the trick was JailbreakMe.com, a site owned by Comex. It was working for some time and then it disappeared.

Recently, Jailbreaking a smartphone was made completely legal. The result: JailbreakMe.com is there again. JailbreakMe works on the iPod, iPhone or iPad, and gives you the ability to run more apps.

Just visit the website with your device and it will do the rest. It does not destroy it, or create any problems in running your software.

You can completely reverse the jailbreaking by logging in to iTunes. Now you can easily and legally (as far as I know, do your own research, I am not a lawyer) jailbreak your iPhone, iPod or iPad, and run all those apps that were banned from the Apple iTunes store.

Redmondpie.com has listed all the devices that are compatible with the site:

iPod 1G on 3.1.2
iPod 1G on 3.1.3
iPod 2G on 3.1.2

What's a jailbreak? Why do I have to jailbreak? The answer is in the FAQ on jailbreakme:
A jailbreak is simply the ability to run apps and use themes and tweaks not approved by Apple. Jailbreaking doesn't slow down your device or use any extra battery, and is fully reversible (just restore in iTunes). A jailbreak lets your device be how you want it.

(This is the document that states how jailbreaking is legal in the U.S. Recommendation of the Register of Copyrights June 11, 2010)
