The iPhone is obviously a huge seller and a consumer super-giant. But a new report by SF Gate's Tech Chronicles has shown that predictions of its' total domination may have been premature...Android is giving Apple a run for their money.

A new survey showed that Android's method of various manufacturers and providers is giving them an edge over the new-annual-phone plan from Apple. This is probably reinforced by the usual bout of bugs that come with each new generation, since the iPhone has a reputation of being released before it is ready to meet market deadlines.

According to Neilsen Co., 27% of all new smartphones bought on the market this quarter are Android phones, while only 23% are iPhones. While the iPhone 4 was late on the market this quarter, this still seems a reasonable number, given the drop in company shares from 34% to 27%.

That doesn't mean that the iPhones aren't wildly popular, but when it comes down to the final numbers Android might be surpassing them. Especially since certain other smartphones are taking a major hit, like RIM's Blackberry. With the UAE now banning the device, even the international professionals who commonly used the 'Crackberry' are likely to turn to larger providers.

I think it will begin to become a matter of brand loyalty in coming months/years, rather than one of the product itself. RIM has a very small fan base, while Android's is growing. Apple may find a certain amount of cynicism developing if they don't start taking care of glitches before releasing their products, though it is doubtful they will see losses any time soon.

All in all, there isn't an iPhone domination...instead, it shares the monopoly with Android, and the two are sure to continue providing plenty of competition for one another in thr future.
