We were out front blogging about super model Naomi Campbell’s scheduled testimony before the Hague, to testify against the former leader of Liberia, Charles Taylor.
Mr. Taylor is on trial for alleged human rights abuse and using “Blood Diamonds” to fund his regime.
ABC News is reporting that, apparently, at a party for Nelson Mandela, where both Taylor and Miss Campbell were guests, that the former Liberian leader was so smitten with the model that he dispatched his men in the wee hours of the night to woo Miss Campbell with "blood diamonds".
The Hague wants Miss Campbell to verify that she was indeed given these illegal blood diamonds by Taylor – this will prove that he had access to these banned diamonds, and was not only using them to fund his alleged abusive regime, but was using them to facilitate hook ups.
Miss Campbell says that she recalled Mr. Taylor’s men waking her up and giving her the a bag full of something, which she described as "dirty", but that she wasn’t certain that they were indeed diamonds.
Let me just say that this blogger is skeptical about Miss Campbell’s claim of being ignorant on whether Mr. Taylor’s gifts were diamonds or not. I am not going to go as far as saying that she knew that the baubles were deemed blood diamonds, but I will venture to say that she must have known what they were, in general.
Miss Campbell is a super model - she must have posed several times with diamonds on her scrumptious person, and now we are to believe that her knowledge of “a girl’s best friend” was impaired?
She could tell us that she was not aware that Liberia was mining these blood diamonds or that she was so taken with the gifts that she didn’t inquire about whence they came – but not knowing that they were diamonds? What of the salient issue that she told her friend, Mia Farrow, about the diamonds?
I think that she is embarrassed now because she knew after the fact whence these blood diamonds came from. And now that blood diamonds are in the fore among those she hangs with, she doesn't have a cogent argument to defend herself among her politically correct friends.
By the way, Miss Campbell, please try not to lose your temper, I think that there are armed guards at the Hague.
