With the release of the all new iPhone 4 from Apple Inc. comes the question, how good is the GPS? How easy to use is it? Is it better than previous versions.
Well, the answers to those questions are: great, easy, much better. I think, however that you are looking for a more detailed answer so here goes...
With the iPhone 4 comes the Maps and Compass apps. They are not new to the iPhone, however they are much, much improved in their accuracy and display.
If you are in an unfamiliar area and you are wondering where you are you can use your iPhone 4 to pinpoint your location on a map so so that you can quickly know where you are and where you need to go in order to not be lost anymore.
The iPhone 4 uses a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi and cellular towers to find your location. As you move, the iPhone updates your location automatically.
What's also cool is if you are heading to a party, once you get there you can drop a pin mark on the map of your location and you can share it with your friends so they know where to find you.
With the iPhone 4, you can search for locations with words. If you are hungry you can just type in "food" into the search box and it will pinpoint all the nearest coffee houses that appear on the map. You can also use the search box to find an address or a business name.
Maps on the iPhone 4 are very crisp and detailed as a result of the Retina display. This makes it fun to find your location. Also, you can switch between map view, satellite view and hybrid view. You can even see a street view of a particular address. Of course this doesn't work with every address because Google hasn't photographed every single square inch of the world yet. :)
With Maps on the iPhone you can even see live traffic information. It indicates traffic speed along your route in green, yellow and red highlights.
With the iPhone you can get turn-by-turn directions or follow a highlighted map route and track your progress with GPS. This is very good for those who don't want to print maps out and then if they get lost they can't do anything or for those who just like having a GPS. I know I do.
The Compass app also comes with the iPhone 4. It works with the built-in digital compass to tell you which direction your iPhone is facing. You can also use it in the Maps app. The compass rotates the onscreen map to match the direction you're facing. This makes finding your way that much easier.
