To begin, the iPad is sleek, it is beautiful and I even agree with Apple that it is rather magical. When I first heard about it, I though that it would just be a passing phase, however, now I am convinced otherwise. There are over 200,000 apps for the iPad. This puts it way ahead of any other tablet device. Upon first having the iPad in my hands, I was in love. Sure there are some things that could be improved - and I will get to those soon - but the device itself even in its first generation is fantastic.
I doubted, at first that this device would be able to take the place of my laptop, however now there is almost nothing that I can not do with this iPad that I can with my laptop.
Safari
First, there is Safari. It has been perfected for the iPad. It puts webpages in portrait or landscape on the iPad's lagre Multi-Touch screen and you are immediately immersed in the web. I found myself just playing around on Google.com because it was simply so fun to just click on things with my finger and watch them instantly pop up. If you have the 3G version, you will be even more satisfied with Safari. You can surf the web from anywhere.
Bookmarks are simple and easy to use and you can even create icons on the iPad's Home screen for easy one-tap access to your favorite webpages.
Photos
Photos on the iPad are simply incredible. When you open the photos app you think that you are sitting at your coffee table with stacks of photos sitting waiting to be looked through. The iPad does such a great job in displaying your photos. If you are a photographer, the iPad is almost essential for you. It is so easy to carry your portfolio around with you and the gorgeous 9.7-inch display shows off your photos to soon-to-be clients in vivid color with beautiful brightness and contrast.
The iPad's photo app works seamlessly with Faces and Places in iPhoto for the mac. If you want to see photo of a specific family member? Just tap the faces button and tap the family member you want to see. It's that simple.
You can even import photo directly to your iPad from your camera with a special adapter.
Email on the iPad is wonderful. I was very excited the first time I opened the Mail app and I was not disappointed. It is very simple to use and you view your email in both portrait and landscape mode.
The keyboard on the iPad is really what makes it fun. It is so natural, but futuristic at the same time.
The Mail app lets you view your attachments with image and photo appearing right alongside your text so you know what it is all about!
iPod
The iPad is fantastic with music. It has a built in speaker so you can share your favorite tunes with your friends. Using the iPod function on the iPad is a lot of fun. You can really get immersed in your music. You can browse through the cover art and select an album that you would like to listen to, just like looking through a stack of CDs, but more organized and easy to use.
I love the way that the iPad lets you see your music. The iPad comes with Genius, the iTunes based musical genius which will created mixes from based on the music that you listen to most or rate the highest. It can also analyze songs in your iTunes library and find songs that would sound good together.
iTunes
The iPad has iTunes built in so you can purchase songs, videos and TV shows directly from your iPad. This is really great because where ever you are you can purchase your favorite tunes and listen to them as much as you want.
iBooks
The iPad was virtually built to be an ebook reader. The screen is great for reading beautifully illustrated books and you can flip pages naturally and it seems like you are actually reading a real book. There is the built in app iBookstore with which you can easily buy books and download them instantly to your iPad.
Notes
Notes on the iPad are just like notes on the iPhone, just with a bigger screen and a bit easier to use. It is really easy to just jot down quick notes, or maybe you would like to write down a family recipe before you leave your family reunion, whatever. It is very easy and even fun to use.
Calendar and Contact
The calandar and contact applications are very easy to use. You can keep your schedule easily with the built-in calendar app. The contacts app makes it very easy to keep in touch with everyone. You have quick access to all of your contacts on your iPad. You can sync your contacts and calendars through iTunes. This makes it easy to keep all your calendars up-to-date.
Spotlight Search
Spotlight search is very useful on the iPad. Sometimes you don't have time to look through all your stuff. Spotlight search is even available in a lot of apps such as the contacts app. This makes it easier than ever to keep track of all your information.
Accessibility
Universal access is built right into the iPad. It makes it easy for everyone to be able to use the iPad device.
Maps
You can explore the world with the iPad. It has build in maps utilizing Google's astounding Google Earth software. Street view, satellite view and all.
Apps
The iPad comes with the Apps Store. This gives you instant access to over 200,000 apps. There are so many of them and they are the real reason why the iPad is so wonderful. There are so many to choose from and though there may be many that aren't very useful, there are plenty of very, very helpful, useful, fun, entertaining apps.
Things That Could Be Improved About the iPad
The iPad is really a great device and with the starting price of $499 it is pretty hard to resist buying it.
There are, however a few features that I think are very important that Apple needs to add in the next release.
1. There is no camera. I think that it is essential that the iPad get both front and rear facing cameras. This would enable photographers to always have a camera with them and it would also make the iPad useful for video chat and video conferencing. This is a very important feature and I seriously wonder why Apple did not release the iPad with cameras.
2. USB ports. These are pretty obvious. With no slot for an extra SD card for more memory, I think it essential that the iPad get some USB ports. This would make all the special adapters unnecessary, so I think that explains why Apple didn't include the ports. They probably earn a lot of money from selling the adapters so including USB ports would remove that extra revenue from Apple.
3. Flash Support. Despite Steve Jobs' thinking that Flash is dead and the Internet no longer uses it, the fact remains: millions of websites are built with flash and it will take years before those websites are made up to modern standards. It would make browsing the web even easier if the iPad just had Flash support and you could view websites that use Flash without a problem.
4. Multi-Tasking. Multi-tasking is a necessity for a device like the iPad. If Apple wants it to really take the place of most netbooks and laptop computers, they are going to have to include multi-tasking in the iPad's list of features.
5. A Non-Reflective Screen. This is very important. Right now, reading outside on the iPad is not very easy because the iPad's screen is so polished and beautiful that it flawlessly reflects your surroundings just as easily as it displays its information.
Summary
Overall, the iPad is worth the $499 that it costs, but there are things that can be improved with the iPad, but overall, it's beautifully designed and it works fantastically. It gives you all it promises and more.
Do you need it? Not really, however, it is really useful if you do have it. Do you want it? Yes! Like almost every Apple product, the iPad is beautiful, innovative and everyone is talking about it.
