Foursquare has updated its iPhone app. With this update, the company brings two new features that will make the application signifigantly more useful and social. These new features allow you to do more with foursquare. You don't just check in to some place and that's that. You get to share your experience and information through photos and comments. This is a big step forward for Foursquare and is worthy of being applauded.
These new features are very easy to use. When you check in to a place you will be prompted to add a photo in the same way you are already prompted to add a "shout" with each check in. Even if you choose not to add a photo when you first check in, you can still do so afterwards. This photo will then be added to the check in detail page. This page is also where you and others can comment on your check in.
Photos and comments will mostly be shared between you and your friends, not just to any random strangers. Your Foursquare photos will only be visible to your Foursquare friends and the other social networks that you share with them. This will keep your privacy to a higher degree than you may expect. Also, commens will only be visible to your Foursquare friends. This is probably due to the company wanting people to have an incentive to join the network.
If you associate photos with tips or venues, they will be public to all users. This is done with the intention of adding richer content to your location choices.
Overall, the new features seem to very well respect your privacy and add a whole new side of usability to Foursquare.
